Manufacturing Shop Worker Job Description

A manufacturing shop worker is responsible for operating, maintaining, and supporting production equipment in a manufacturing environment, ensuring products are assembled, inspected, and prepared for shipment while maintaining safety and quality standards.

Core Responsibilities:

• Operate and maintain machinery: Use and maintain production line equipment such as punch presses, gang punches, ironworkers, threading machines, and other manufacturing equipment.
• Assemble and inspect products: Follow production instructions to assemble parts, perform basic quality checks, etc.
• Material handling: Move, lift, and store raw materials and finished goods; use forklifts or other lifting equipment as needed.
• Work area maintenance: Keep workspaces clean, organized, and in compliance with safety regulations.
• Safety compliance: Adhere to all company safety rules, wear appropriate PPE, and follow hazard prevention procedures.

Skills and Qualifications:

• Ability to read and follow written or verbal instructions.
• Basic knowledge of shop math, safety procedures, and manufacturing processes.
• Proficiency with power tools, hand tools, and machinery.
• Strong attention to detail, hand-eye coordination, and problem-solving skills.
• Physical stamina to stand, lift, and work in varied conditions (heat, cold, humidity).

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 50 lbs., and frequently bend, squat, or crouch.
• Ability to operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and other equipment safely.
• Willingness to work in inclement weather and follow safety protocols.

Work Environment:

Fast-paced manufacturing plant or fabrication shop.

Exposure to machinery, tools, and materials; potential for noise and vibration.

Team-oriented with close collaboration between workers and supervisors.
