Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina has an immediate need for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer.

The ML engineering team plays an integral part in delivering on the enterprise's Data Science MLOps strategy and capabilities. Our ML Engineers work closely with Data Scientists to automate AI/ML models, including traditional data science, machine learning, and generative AI. This role is crucial for GenAI automation within the AWS ecosystem.

The AI/ML COE develops foundational AI/ML capabilities and solutions that serve various business use cases, providing thought leadership on AI/ML's potential to deliver transformational value. It maintains and advances our AI/ML operations environment, standards, and best practices to scale data science solutions from ideation to deployment and integration. The COE also fosters a community of practice among data scientists at BCBSNC and builds partnerships with universities and other Blues plans.

What You Will Do

  1. Define and extract data from multiple sources, integrate disparate data into a common model, and load data into target systems using efficient programming processes.
  2. Document and test complex data systems that unify data from various sources, making it accessible to data scientists and other users through scripting and programming languages.
  3. Improve, deploy, and maintain models created by Data Scientists into scalable, cloud-based production systems using efficient ML operations pipelines.
  4. Write and optimize code to ensure performance and reliability of data extraction and processing.
  5. Lead requirements gathering sessions with business and technical teams to translate business needs into technical specifications.
  6. Develop advanced SQL queries for data extraction, analysis, and model building.
  7. Manage delivery of large, complex data and ML engineering projects.
  8. Design and develop scalable data pipelines for data ingestion, cleansing, transformation, and validation to support analysis and modeling.
  9. Ensure data process performance and reliability through testing and validation.
  10. Collaborate with teams to resolve data quality and operational issues, ensuring timely delivery.
  11. Create scripts for database and data process maintenance, monitoring, and tuning.
  12. Analyze databases to identify improvements and optimize performance.
  13. Design compelling visualizations to effectively communicate information to users.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree with 5 years' experience in Data Warehouses, Data Lakes, Big Data platforms, and programming in Python, R, or related languages.
  • Understanding of ML algorithms, experience creating and executing efficient MLOps pipelines, and tuning ML models.
  • Familiarity with large language models and implementing AI solutions in cloud environments.
  • Alternatively, 7 years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.

Salary Range

Our compensation package is competitive and reflects market standards. Starting salaries are typically near the middle of the listed range, influenced by experience, skills, licensure, certifications, and organizational needs.
