Job Goal:

To maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. The primary goal is to ensure the overall cleanliness and hygiene of the school premises.

Qualifications (minimum education, licensure, skills, and/or experience):

  • High school diploma or its equivalent preferred but not required.
  • Satisfactory completion of two-hour asbestos awareness training course within sixty days of employment.
  • Satisfactory completion of Red Cross First Aid Course including CPR within 60 days of employment
  • Must be able to read and understand job and product directions.
  • Must be dependable, honest, and reliable.
  • Must pass a general physical examination.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and drug test.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Keep buildings and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
  • Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
  • Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are open during the hours of building occupancy.
  • Sweep classrooms daily and dusts furniture.
  • Clean corridors as required.
  • Clean and disinfect restrooms daily and clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
  • Wash all windows on both inside and outside as required.
  • Keep the grounds free from rubbish.
  • Perform such yard keeping chores as grass cutting, shrub trimming, and the like, as necessary, to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
  • Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
  • Clean all chalkboards as required.
  • Make minor building repairs.
  • Report promptly to the head custodian, principal or assistant principal repairs needed.
  • Maintain on a regular schedule all motors and other mechanical equipment requiring scheduled servicing.
  • Report immediately to the head custodian, principal, or assistant principal any damage to school property.
  • Remain on the school premises during school hours, and during non-school hours, when the use of the building has been authorized and the person in charge of plant operations requires his/her attendance.
  • Conduct an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair.
  • Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the person in charge of plant operations.
  • Comply with laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and hazardous materials.
  • Regularly monitor all electrical installations in the school to ensure their safe condition.
  • Routinely monitor fire extinguishers for proper working condition.
  • Chang air conditioner filters on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • Aid central office maintenance personnel when on campus.
  • Assist cafeteria staff.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:
  • Must be in good health.
  • Must possess physical skills and stamina to perform job responsibilities.
  • Must be able to perform tasks including the operation of equipment such as buffers, lawn mowers, weed-whackers, scrub and vacuum machines, tractors, hand tools, and hand trucks (dollies) etc.
  • Must be physically able to perform tasks including mopping, stooping, bending, crawling, balancing, carrying ladders, pulling, reaching up and down and heavy lifting (50 pounds and over).
  • Hours can be prolonged or irregular with some travel included.

Environmental Conditions:

The custodian performs his duties both inside and outside. The custodian can be exposed to temperature

variations of hot and cold. Biological and chemical exposures are present. Surfaces can be wet, slippery, and

a variety of inclines.

Terms of Employment: 12 month (salary in accordance with current salary schedule)

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel (Bulletin 130).
