We help our customers achieve their goals of creating a stronger power grid by reducing risks and identifying innovative solutions for their project challenges.Beta Engineering is currently looking for a Substation Engineer to join their team. Substation Engineers (SE) are responsible for the design, interpretation, application and documentation of drawings and calculations pertaining to the physical design of a substation. Substation Engineers are tasked with ensuring that designs, and their applications, are completed to code and standards set forth by the appropriate authoritative bodies. In addition, SE's are required to work with customer representatives, Project Management Teams and other engineering disciplines to ensure designs meet appropriate specifications and requirements.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesChecks conduit, grounding, control shelter, electrical arrangements, outdoor lighting and equipment vendor design packagesPerforms and checks grounding calculations.Performs and checks conduit fill calculations.Performs and checks pulling tension calculations.Performs and checks vehicle tracking calculations.Performs and checks outdoor lighting calculations.Performs and checks lightning protection designs calculations.Performs and checks substation Sag‑10 calculations.Performs and checks flexible jumper calculations.Performs and checks bus design calculations.Performs and checks arc‑flash calculations.Performs and checks insulation coordination calculations.Performs and checks underground ampacity calculations.Creates and checks material list descriptions for all major equipment.Creates and checks material list descriptions for all minor substation material.Demonstrates integrity and ethics in all client relationships and communications.Answers technical questions posed by construction managers, field staff, project managers, customers and their representatives.Recognises and recommends methods to improve customer's experience.Performs other studies as able and required.Travels periodically to both customer offices for project meetings and to job sites for construction visits and testing.Manages day‑to‑day activities of schedule and design of projects assigned to them.Coordinates and problem‑solves between design teams and departments.ExpectationsPerforms quality work within deadlines with or without direct supervision.Interacts professionally with other employees and customers.Works effectively as a team contributor on all assigned projects.Communicates regularly with supervisor regarding designs, concerns, studies or tests.Desires to participate in continued education and training.Maintains check print set of all work they perform.Utilises the department resources in an effective manner to get all work accomplished on time and correctly.Adheres to and practices the Beta core competencies and Beta principles.Occasional overnight travel to active job sites.Must have a clean driving record as use of company vehicles is a requirement of the position.Education and ExperienceBachelor degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Civil Engineering.Strong background in Microsoft Word, Mathcad, Excel, and PowerPoint; strong verbal and written communication skills.Knowledge of all or some of the following applications is preferred: AutoCAD, CDEGS grounding software, CYMCAP, LitePro, FEAP, Southwire SAG/Ten, Alcoa, Vehicle Tracking, SAP‑2000.Working ConditionsWill work in an office environment with minimal exposure to dust, noise, and other environmental hazards.Overnight travel is required to an active construction site for a period of one or two weeks at a time.
